Functional Safety

Functional safety is the part of the overall safety of plant and equipment that depends on the correct functioning of safety-related systems and other risk reduction measures such as safety instrumented systems (SIS), alarm systems and basic process control systems (BPCS).

IPDS can provide experienced Process Safety Engineers and TUV-certified E&I engineers to support and/or lead the full life cycle process as detailed in BS EN 61511. Our engineers have a broad range of experience leading and supporting Process Safety Management reviews using a range of risk hazard analysis techniques, including LOPA studies, to determine Safety Integrated Level (SIL) gaps for the application of safety instrumented systems.

Integrity level (IL) verification of the SIS design can be demonstrated using proprietary software that integrates an extensive device database with simplified fault tree analysis equations to provide significant cost and time savings and allow the Client to achieve both the required IL target and reliability goals.

SIL function performance reviews can be supported by experienced IPDS engineers to advise and guide the Client on how to manage their inventory. In addition, the development and collection of instrument classification data can be supported to enable IL verification and analytical documentation and subsequently supported with real time performance.

Both Batch and Continuous plant operations can be supported with hardware and architectural solutions, enabling end-to-end or a structured testing and inspection strategies to identify those undetectable dangerous failure modes.

Furthermore, IPDS can develop supporting competency management schemes to identify roles and responsibilities, measure key competencies and establish a training and assessment scheme to monitor individual and group performance.
